We were happy to find a lot of do-able, you-don’t-have-to-have-a-million-dollar-estate projects in Gardenista: The Definitive Guide to Stylish Outdoor Spaces (even though many of the ideas were photographed on some seriously upscale real-estate). We used our x-ray vision to find cool ideas applicable to all sorts of venues.
Consider the Container Garden on Wheels, above, something we can imagine for an apartment with a terrace (like ours), or small garden…

Designer John Derian’s transformed a porch into a comfortable plein air dining room. We especially like the chair-height stools cut from a nineteenth-century wood beam, the mishmash of tables and lamps, and that surprising green doorknob.

If we ever did acquire a chunk of land, we might build this screened-in freestanding room out of 4 x 4s and wire mesh. It provides a curiously porch-like mosquito-and-fly-free space to hang out in, and a protected area for growing edible plants that deer would otherwise decimate.

If you have a water spigot on the outside of your house, a zinc bucket makes a fine sink for cleaning just picked herbs or vegetables, or for washing up (or maybe even soaking tired feet…)

…A swell book for the arm-chair gardener, as well…
