For the first 3 or so minutes of this video of a visit to a butterfly reserve in Mexico, naturalist Phil Torres treks and talks while he makes his way to the winter encampment of millions of overwintering monarch butterflies. Then at 3:39, a miracle happens: Enlivened by the warmth of the sunshine, butterflies drop from the trees to drink nectar and mate. And lets us listen, leaving only the gentle sound of a cascading ‘waterfall” of butterflies, unlike anything in the world.
(We’ve set the video to start at 3:28 to give an immediate blast of beauty. To listen to Torres’ preamble, start at the beginning.)
