We’ve spent the past ten days or so on the other side of the country, looking at everything but our laptops, and being nothing but lazy. Somehow doing NOTHING filled us up, gave us lots to think about and share…
Like this sign we saw (when Nina said LOOK UP!) in Balmy Alley in San Francisco, known for its wonderful murals, from one end to another…
(and which happens to be right around the corner from Humphry Slocum, our favorite ice cream place – more on that later)…
…a quiet little street full of messages…

…and gifts…

…

…and visions from local, sometimes anonymous, sometimes famoso artists…

…
…being on vacation, it wasn’t until we got home that we looked up Balmy Alley, and discovered that mural-making is a big deal in San Francisco. They are all over the place…and you can even take tours of them through Precita Eyes “a community based mural arts organization.”

…but all you have to do to see them is wander, and keep your eyes open…
Your “somehow doing NOTHING filled us up” comment goes hand in hand with an article in today’s (8/25) NY Times about how we forfeit downtime (which allows us “to better learn and remember information, or come up with new ideas”) by keeping our heads “busy with digital input.” The “push-pull” of the mind vis a vis of what must be done vs. some relaxing activity is one that is a current struggle.
Welcome back! You were missed…
