Our friend Jody Lotito Levine pulled out a book she was reading. In it was a bookmark made from a dollar bill. It is one of the better bookmarks we’ve seen, as good as slices of ribbon or a delicate length of toilet paper (below), each having their own unique effect.
Using a dollar as a bookmark does several things:It gives us a subtle, unexpected feeling of abundance…
AND
It makes us SEE what a beautiful piece of paper a dollar bill is: interestingly printed, with nice heft, durable
AND
It makes us aware how much we think about these printed pieces of paper every day, a modern symbol of survival and worth…
We wondered what would happen if we assigned it different meaning…

…good luck perhaps…expressions of gratitude…
…POSSIBILITY.
What a simple found-in-the-moment bookmark can do or be…

I use foreign bills that I’ve neglected to exchange as bookmarks. My favorite are Laotian Kip which have no monetary value and cannot be exchanged outside of Laos, but have absolutely stunning depictions of Laotian life.
